THE CHALLENGE Can you write a new melody or a new lyric to a famous Paul McCartney song? Our challenge in 2020 is to write new lyric or a new melody to an existing famous song and the first song we have chosen is Paul´s Yesterday. The new lyric or melody will, of course, both have exactly the same structure and metre to match the original, so when the winning Lyric and the winning Melody are put together by the UKSC Team they will be a perfect fit and a completely new song will be created. The UKSC will professionally record the resulting new song for the winners! Simple, but brilliant if we do say so ourselves. The first classic song we have chosen to start this songwriting challenge is Yesterday by Paul McCartney. Paul had the melody for this song for a long time before he had a flash of inspiration for the final lyrics while driving a hire car on holiday in Portugal (his first working lyrics were about scrambled eggs!). So, if you are lost during lockdown and wondering what to write, get busy and let us have your alternative Melody or your alternative Lyrics for this classic. The new resulting song will also be passd on to our record company A&R contacts and producers and others in the industry. MORE OPPORTUNITIES There are more opportunities than ever this year in The UK Songwriting Contest with new song categories and new prizes that include an International Record Deal. There are now 27 different Cateories for songs ranging from Pop to Folk, Blues to Singer Songwriter, Christmas Songs to Love Songs and there is also an Instrumental section and a Lyrics Only section. Something for everyone. This year also sees a special Crisis Songs category that is attracting a lot of attention. We look forward to receiving your work this year - the UKSC Team and the judges are waiting to hear from you! Full details and entry forms are on the UKSC official website at https://songwritingcontest.co.uk Take care and be safe! UKSC
