WINNERS AND FINALISTS
POP
(Joint Winners)
This year's Pop entries were of such outstanding quality that the judges had a very difficult task and, in the end, after much deliberation, it was decided to make these two songs joint winners. Multi Platinum number one hit songwriter Shelly Peiken said these two songs were "Superb! Professional. Cuttable! I love them. My fave is "Lightening" I love how the hook is created via phrasing of just the one simple line" (she also liked the pop finalists Diamond In The Rough and The Other Side). The #1 Hit songwriter and well known songwrting coach Mark Cawley said his favourite was "Until Your Heart's Been Broken" saying "I love this song, very classic pop style and structure. The chorus lifts out of the structure just like a great, memorable chorus should! I also really like the way the melody compliments and carries the emotion of the lyric throughout" The finalist songs listed below were also all contenders to win this year:

CHRISTMAS SONGS
WINNER
In My Dreams
by Peter Lewis and Tony Hume
The winning song in this category deals with the theme of being alone at Christmas. It evokes a strong Christmas atmosphere by the use of vivid lyrical imagery and subtle musical hints, but the word Christmas is only mentioned once in the entire song. The melody is charming and memorable, and the lyrics are succinct, vivid and clever (eg the use of the word hands after mentioning the time on the clock). This sad song about remembering happier Christmas times provides an interesting alternative take on Christmas songs. The finalist songs and songwriters listed below were also considered as contenders to win this category this year:

(Joint Winners)
WinnerI Like You Better When You Ugly
by Nina G |
WinnerFeeding The Flame
By Albany Down |
Nina G is a creative songwriter and singer from Norway and a graduate of the UK's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Nina has a passion for music videos and she creates and directs her visual concepts to go with the music. According to Nina, the visuals are as important as the actual song: 'I always write the song and the video at the same time in my mind" she says. "If I'm not seeing anything in particular when I'm writing something, I have to keep changing the song until an interesting image appears. And then it all makes sense.' In contrast, Feeding The Flame, from the UK band Albany Down, is a very different video submission that successfully uses established filmatic techniques to create an apocalyptic atmosphere reminiscent of a number of recent blockbuster movies. It has a big, professional movie feel and a lot of time, effort and expertise were clearly put into creating this video, making it a worthy joint winner.

by Noel Gama Listen here |
In joint first place in this year's Adult Contemporary category are songwriters Amy Rushton and Noel Gama. Amy's song The Middle was a Finalist in last year's UKSC and she re entered it again this year to win first place. It is a dark and beautiful song with strong imagery, a haunting melody and a perfect melodic/lyrical fit that radiates integrity and honesty. Blind Vision is a much lighter song with more of a mainstream pop feel but its lyric deals with a profound and thoughtful issue that works surprisingly well in contrast to the lightness of the melody and arrangement. These two entries are very different from each other but are so good in their own ways that they were made joint winners. The finalist songs and songwriters listed below were also contenders to win this category this year:

INSTRUMENTAL
(Joint Winners)
This was one of the most difficult categories to judge this year with many stunning and outstanding entries. In the end one judge, TV and Film Composer Jamie Serafi, was left with the final decision and he agonised over the final choices, deciding on joint winners. Jamie said of all the finalist songs: "Absolutely fantastic! It's VERY difficult to choose because they are all so strong...and what makes one better than the other when they are all completely different?" About the two winners he said "These are both fantastic instrumental piece of music, and both take you on a rollercoaster of unexpected intentions. You think they are going to do something and then they do something completely different and both hold my interest. I could look into the musical elements and harmonic progressions of all of the entries etc and these two pieces of music may not necessarily win, but as pieces of music being heard for the first time they have the most impact on me. With such different genres to choose from I really have had to choose based on what holds my interest and keeps me listening." He made the following comments about the two winners: "With regard to the Haark Overture, the colour and creative musical ideas of the orchestral combinations of instruments showed exceptional knowledge of the genre. Not only did it take on a cartoon style genre, it worked beautifully as a standalone piece of music. I also appreciated the nod to the more nationalistic style of Russian composers whose style was imitated beautifully." "With regard to New York, you are very much taken on a highly interesting and sophisticated musical journey where you never quite know where you are going to be taken next. What starts out as a familiar, contemporary jazz piece, suddenly takes you through the medium of opera". The finalist songs and songwriters listed below were also contenders to win this category this year:
