COUNTRY WINNER
Playing In The Ruins
by Joe Wrabek
Listen To The Track Here
The winning song in the Country Category this year is Playing In The Ruins by US songwriter Joe Wrabek. In previous years the Country winners have been classic country songs or pop/country crossover but this year the judges went for something very different. Joe describes himself as a "traditional" country songwriter and this very simple recording reminded CMA award winning UKSC judge and country expert Lucie Diamond of some of the early country artists. The song's very traditional style and recording provides a striking contrast to the song's futuristic post-apocalyptic vision. The finalist songs and songwriters listed below were also contenders to win this category this year:

Listen To The Track Here
This year the contest received a large variety of acoustic works, piano pieces, filmic theme music, orchestral scores, rock and ethnic music and the judges decided to award the winning positions to an orchestral composition by british composer Robin Stevens. UKSC judge Jamie Serafi said: "The title conjures up an image before the first notes are heard and thankfully the opening, expected hymn-like quality completes this expectation effectively. Masterful use of a wide variety of orchestral combinations and techniques in the battle-like middle section with moments of the opening theme cleverly appearing throughout by way of keeping the fluency and underlying musical idea".
