Here is a video that is essential viewing for every songwriter! Paul McCartney is one of the biggest influences behind The UK Songwriting Contest, and in this new interview he talks about how he wrote and recorded some of his most iconic songs. We had to share this one with you because we know all songwriters will find this fascinating and will benefit from watching!

In the interview Paul talks about the first song he ever wrote using the chords C, F, G and G7 and how he wrote songs together with John Lennon in the early days and how they never came away from a session without a new song. He tells us how he came up with the idea for Eleanor Rigby and how he found the name for that song character. He describes how George Harrison saved And I Love Her with a simple four note riff. He talks about how he comes up with song ideas and how he develops them, confiding that expressing his innermost personal feelings in his songs is so important. Around twenty songs are covered and there are some fascinating insights.

This is so enlightening. I could have carried on and on listening to Paul’s commentary on his songs! It does finish rather abruptly and leaves you wanting more - this is a unique opportunity not to be missed. How good to know that Paul who writes songs so easily also used things like phone directories to find names that would ‘sing’!

I write songs but When I listen to them I know they do not have that kind of magic.Paul and John you were both magical songwriters and George wasn"t bad either.

Paul and John were very lucky to have found each other and they did a fantastic job collaborating together. The songs they recorded back then were very commercial and catchy. With today's music i think are very distant with good melody lyrics and arrangement. I think George Martin played a big part in this department. They all came together as one big happy family. My songs are influeced by the likes of The Beatles Roy Orbison Elvis Presley Buddy Holly and the likes. Without these artists music would have been very bland and should i say a bit boring. If anyone would like to take a listen to me and hear my influences that would be great Mal Coote. Keep rolling on Paul you are great and well deserved a knighthood. God bless you. Mal.

It really is a good message. It shows a great songwriter taking songs from his life, and his life spent on thinking of songs.

Amazing to hear these backstories and insights. I read recently how Paul and John bounced off each other and want to share an example from the song ‘Getting Better.’
Paul sings, ‘Got to admit it’s getting better, a little better all the time.’
John adds, ‘It cant get much worse!’
For me that couple of lines sums up how their songwriting magic, and I have to smile when I hear it.
